Characterization of pore and grain size distributions in porous geological samples – An image processing workflow

چکیده
An image processing workflow is presented for the characterization of pore and grain size distributions in porous geological samples from X-ray microcomputed tomography (μCT) scanning electron microscopy (SEM) images. The five sandstone including Berea, Buff Nugget, Castlegate, Bentheimer, one carbonate sample, Indiana limestone, are extracted using proposed workflow. Two-dimensional acquired SEM images were found to be biased toward smaller sizes misrepresenting actual 3D distributions. Stereological techniques unfolded measured 2D comparable with μCT results. While larger pores grains can easily detected images, quantification small-scale heterogeneities severely influenced by their limits resolution. We show that microstructural details resolved significantly impact rock samples. For example, SEM-resolved microporosities limestone result bimodal sizes, whereas observations exhibit unimodal processed results openly available may used researchers investigating processing, magnetic resonance relaxation or fluid flow simulations natural rocks. methodology implemented process rocks as well other types materials.

Processing and characterization of porous Ti2AlC with controlled porosity and pore size
In this work, we demonstrate a simple and inexpensive way to fabricate porous Ti2AlC, one of the best studied materials from the MAX phase family, with controlled porosity and pore size. This was achieved by using NaCl as the pore former, which was dissolved after cold pressing but before pressureless sintering at 1400 C. Porous Ti2AlC samples with a volume fraction of porosity ranging from 10 ...
متن کاملAn improved workflow for image-and laser-based virtual geological
Photorealistic 3D models, representing an object’s surface geometry textured with conventional photography, are used for visualization, interpretation and spatial measurement in many disparate fields, such as cultural heritage, archaeology and throughout the earth sciences, including geology. Virtual models of geological outcrops allow for large quantities of geometric data, such as sizes of fe...
متن کاملUnderstanding Relationships Between NMR and Pore Size Distributions in Porous Media
Conventional wisdom for NMR interpretations of water-saturated porous media is that the NMR spectra are analogous to the pore size distribution of the system. This is the basis for understanding porous media as containing large vs. small pores, and is used as a justification for NMR-based permeability correlations. However, there are cases whereby issues of poor connectivity between pores can s...
متن کاملApplications of Image Processing Technique in Porous Material Characterization
Nondestructive testing (NDT) provides safe operation to engineering components – it eliminates the risk of damage during operation, and does not require specific sample preparation. It has been widely used to detect and evaluate defects, or measure properties of different types of materials and engineering structures. Examples of NDT techniques include ultrasonic, radiography, infrared thermogr...
